A big thank you to the members of Skypoint School who welcomed Community Rewilding in to the classroom today.
The aim of the day – To make a portable bird feeder and bug hotel from scratch!
The main trunk of the feeder was made from a treated fencing post, with off cuts used to create a stable base and provide some reinforcement to withstand the strong weather we have been having up at Faifley.
We then drilled holes through the central post and inserted bamboo canes to act as the arms for the feeder. In the meantime, the team were busy making two types of bird feeders.
The first, we poked sticks through apples for the birds to stand on and then covered the rest in sunflower seeds (Yum!).
The second, we threaded cheerios on to pipe cleaners and string which were then shaped in to rings for the birds to chomp down on.
We also added and filled bug hotels for lots of insects to make their homes in on the side.
We added canes to act as the arms, added it all together and put it outside… Perfect!
Outside it all looked great, we have more sessions to come with the team and we are really looking forward to it! I will leave it Ahren & Daniel to sum up the day;
It was a very good day all the kids loved it
It was very creative
The kids loved making the apple feeders
Josh came in the first day, everyone was excited to get started. We started building the bug
hotel and made some bird feeders and sticks for them to stand on then Josh started building
the base then we lifted it outside everyone was excited!!
So we went in and had a good look and it was exciting. It was very messy, just what we like!
