First Tree-planting Push

28th November 2018 By Juliette Walsh

Today was a shortened session due to the impending storm. Four hardy volunteers turned up to tree plant. We’ve chosen a range of native trees for the site: blackthorn, hazel, crab apple, rowan, alder and oak. We are using canes and guards on each. Although there are a few deer that pass through the site, we hope that the trees will be able to develop without too much nibbling either by them or voles and rabbits (although locals say that they never see rabbits here). The idea is to increase the diversity of trees whilst retaining the large areas of grassland which are host to a variety of wild flowers including the rare Butterfly Orchid.
